Overview

The overarching goals in the Critical Response Protocol (CRP) are for participants to practice noticing what they see in a work of art by describing the work’s elements or characteristics as a form of visual literacy. Through the protocol, participants also make connections between the artwork and their own lived experience. Works may elicit emotional responses and raise questions for participants. Protocol questions are designed to foster inquiry while helping participants speculate on the meaning of a work or consider where an artist might go next if the creative process continued. There are no right or wrong answers to the questions in the Critical Response Protocol.

This tool can also be used outside of the arts classroom to examine a variety of content in any subject area.  By following a series of simple prompts, you can foster a culture of deep listening while amplifying student voice as it relates to the content being examined.

CRP Peer Witnessing Course

CRP Peer Witnessing is a modification of the CRP approach typically used with students. The goal of peer witnessing is to get teachers into the classrooms of other teachers for the purpose of reflection on, and discussion of, instructional practice. The CRP Peer Witnessing approach has three roles: witness; host; and facilitators.

This course will give you an introduction to the CRP Peer Witness approach, and cover what you can expect when you are a host or witness.
